Combined Electro Fusion & Butt Fusion Welding Training
Comprehensive Knowledge and Practical Skills for PE Pipe Jointing
This intensive two-day combined training programme is designed to provide operatives and supervisors with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and correctly join Polyethylene (PE) pipework using the two primary industry techniques: Electro Fusion (EF) and Butt Fusion (BF) welding.
The core aim is to instruct operators to safely join pipework in a ductile manner (a sound joint) and provide the technical understanding of what creates brittle joints and service failures.
Upon successful completion, attendees gain an EUSR-endorsed certificate, validating their competence to perform these critical jointing operations in line with current industry standards and best practices.
Who Must Attend?
This course is essential for individuals who are, or will be, directly involved in joining PE pipework across the gas, water, and utility sectors, including:
-
Pipe-laying Operatives
-
Utility Supervisors and Engineers
-
Contractors working on PE pipeline installations
-
Anyone requiring documented proof of competence in both PE Electrofusion and Butt fusion techniques.
Key Learning Outcomes (Course Objectives)
To be certified as Competent, the learner must demonstrate the following critical technical and procedural skills:
-
Technical Competence: Competently undertake electrofusion welding on PE pipes in sizes up to 355mm.
-
Procedural Skills: Ability to correctly set up Electrofusion equipment and correctly introduce PE pipe into machines to eliminate joint fault.
-
Pipe Preparation: Ability to perform essential steps like cutting and scraping.
-
Quality Control: Ability to ensure Fusion Time and Pressure Adherence.
-
Post-Fusion Inspection: Ability to apply a level of quality assurance via Post-Fusion Inspection (visual & data).
-
Safety Awareness: Demonstrate Safety Awareness Throughout Task and carry out the process in accordance with Health and Safety requirements.
Core Course Syllabus Topics
The training course content is delivered through a blend of theoretical (classroom-based) and hands-on practical sessions.
-
Fundamentals of Fusion Welding: Overview of PE materials and the principles of fusion (creating a molecular bond).
-
Equipment & Pipe Preparation: Introduction to the Electrofusion Control Unit (ECU) and Butt Fusion machines, including the crucial step of scraping the pipe surface to remove the oxidized layer.
-
Welding Procedures: Correct adherence to fusion parameters (Fusion Time and Pressure) and alignment/securing protocols.
-
Inspection & Quality Assurance (QA): Post-Fusion Inspection, checking for fusion indicators (EF) and bead formation (BF), and knowledge of Hydrostatic Pressure Testing.
-
Safety & Best Practices: Identifying hazards (electric shock and burns) and managing the negative impact of environmental factors (humidity, rain, wind).
