Mastering Safety in Excavation and Utility Avoidance (EUSR Accredited)

Our EUSR accredited Safe Dig HSG 47 with Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT & Genny) Training is a mandatory course for individuals involved in ground-breaking and excavation works. This comprehensive 1-day programme provides the minimum training required to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved methods.

Crucially, this course covers adherence to HSG 47 guidelines and is mapped to National Occupational Standards. It also addresses requirements often specified for major projects like HS2.

Key Learning Outcomes (Course Content)

By the end of this course, candidates will be certified to safely detect and avoid utility services, having gained knowledge in the following areas:

Legislation & Standards Understanding the legislation and implications of HSG 47 (Avoiding Danger from Underground Services) and GS6 (Working Near Overhead Electric Lines). Overview of BSI PAS 128:2022 (the current specification for underground utility detection).
Planning & Preparation How to correctly interpret utility drawings and line search documents.
Detection Equipment Detection of underground services using Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT4 & Genny) .
Practical Application Use location equipment to locate and mark underground services and avoid damage to them.
Hazard Identification Identify the dangers and hazards associated with underground services and the specific risks of making contact with overhead lines during excavations.

Who Must Attend?

This course is a requirement for anyone whose work involves breaking ground, including excavation, digging, drilling, or using mechanical plant. This includes:

  • Operatives and Supervisors involved in digging and trenching.

  • Utility Workers across gas, water, power, and telecoms.

  • Ground Workers and construction site personnel.

  • Managers and Foremen responsible for planning and overseeing excavation projects.
